Learn more about the winner of the 2018 Grammy for Best Regional Roots Music Album.

At this year’s Grammy Awards, Louisiana-based band Lost Bayou Ramblers won the award for Best Regional Roots Music Album with their album Kalenda.  All the songs on the album are performed in French and it features the band’s contemporary take on classic Cajun music.  Their synthesis of old and new creates a new, innovative spin on the traditional sounds of South Louisiana.

Their album Kalenda celebrates the complexity of the word “Kalenda” in Cajun culture, where it can refer to a Caribbean dance, a Louisiana rhythm, a Cajun rock song, or even a woman’s name.

The Lost Bayou Ramblers were formed in 1999 by Louis Michot (fiddle and vocals) and his brother Andre Michot (Cajun accordion and lap steel guitar).  The brothers started out playing the traditional Cajun music that they learned while part of their family’s band, Les Frères Michot (formed by the brothers’ father and uncles in the 1980s).  The band would later grow to include members Bryan Webre (electric bass), Johnny Campos (electric guitar), Eric Heigle (electronics and acoustic guitar), and Kirklang Middleton (drums).  The band is best known for their constant experimentation and their music is set apart by its distinctive mix of modern sounds and rhythms with ancient Cajun melodies and lyrics.

The Lost Bayou Ramblers have one previous Grammy nomination for their 2007 album Live a la Blue Moon.  The band also gained notoriety for their contribution to the score for the 2012 film Beasts of the Southern Wild.
