Learn How These Musicians Left Their Mark on the Blues Genre

Check out these artists that left their mark on defining the blues genre.

Blues music is a hallmark of American music. With its beginnings in Louisiana, the genre evolved to spread throughout the country, creating subgenres such as urban blues, country blues, Chicago blues, Memphis blues, 12-bar blues, and more. The genre even inspired the development of new music entirely now known as rock and roll. While such music has been so influential, it’s important to understand the musicians that helped to define the blues. Check out just a few of these musicians that forever left their mark on the genre and its development.

Big Bill Broonzy.

When it comes to blues music, Big Bill Broonzy was an influential figure. Since childhood, he made music, primarily using the fiddle. However, he later switched to the guitar when he entered the Chicago blues scene prior to war-era. As a musician and songwriter, he stuck to his folk roots, even when the electric guitar came around, and mentored future generations of musicians, helping them to success in the genre.

Charley Patton.

Blues music wouldn’t be the same without Charley Patton. Known as the father of the Delta blues, his unique style helped to solidify his place as an influential blues artist. With grit and a raw vocal timbre, his influence over music can be seen in the music of Jimi Hendrix, Son House, Howlin’ Wolf, John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, and many more.

Bessie Smith.

As a female artist, Bessie Smith has left her mark on the blues genre. As a role model within the community, her vocal style is powerful which lead to her success. She has influenced various artists such as Billie Holiday and Janis Joplin.
