World Alzheimer’s Month

World Alzheimer’s Month

Get Involved: September is World Alzheimer’s Month.

Alzheimer’s is a type of progressive dementia that affects memory, cognitive function, and behavior.  According to the Alzheimer’s Association, more than 5 million Americans suffer from Alzheimer’s disease with someone developing the disease every 66 seconds.  Alzheimer’s is a destructive disease that doesn’t just affect those diagnosed.  This disease can cause families serious financial and emotional burdens.  To learn more about this devastating disease and to find out how you can help, participate in World Alzheimer’s Month this September.

What is World Alzheimer’s Month?

World Alzheimer’s Month was launched in September 2012 with the intent to raise awareness and challenge the stigma that surrounds dementia.  World Alzheimer’s Month unites leaders, people suffering from dementia, medical professionals, and the media in order to generate recognition for Alzheimer’s as a legitimate health issue.  September provides an opportunity for Alzheimer’s associations to gain credibility and recognition for the work they do.  World Alzheimer’s Month sends a strong message to governments and policy makers and asks them to make positive changes in health care services worldwide.

How Can I Get Involved?

There are many ways to get involved this September.  You can organize your own fundraising event, or participate in an event being hosted near you.  Walk to End Alzheimer’s is a popular event that takes place nationwide and raises awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support, and research.  Another way to get involved is to post on social media platforms and encourage friends and family to learn about the disease.  As always, you can also donate to legitimate Alzheimer’s associations or research initiatives to show your support.
